Dana,
Purchasing the kinds of business attire needed for some professions can be a huge investment, one that a lot of women cannot afford at the beginning of their careers. So what a great idea - starting a company that offers women access to professional clothing at affordable prices through consignment! You can do it!
I can't wait to hear about your business in the next 5 years (when you mentioned you planned to start it)!!

Carolyn,
I loved your comment that, "there is no skill that will take you further in your career and your life than relating well to other people." I had a wonderful mentor tell me the same thing early in my career and it really helped.
He also said the best way to relate to other people was to do everything possible to remove our sometimes unconscious habit of judging people when we are interacting with them. He was right!

I'm finding the women (and men) I coach are being more and more selective on the companies for which they choose to work - and are trying to avoid companies who view employees as expendable.
Maybe this increased selectivity will help companies understand the importance of their workers - that their most important assets go home each night.

Candace,
I've found the best way to obtain the career or position you know you want is to find people in that industry or already working at the company you'd like to target and begin networking with them.
Meet with them, get to know them, and once they are comfortable with you...ask for their help in obtaining the position/career you are seeking. Once they know you and are comfortable, they may be able to recommend you to a hiring manager.
Finding a job is always easier when there are people helping open doors of opportunity.
You can do it!
Sincerely,

What an interesting post because in my mind it brings up the question of protecting the rights of the interviewee versus protecting existing employees.
I agree with Kathy Caprino - it wouldn't surprise me if, in the future, employers used a battery of tests to help assess potential future behavior.
In the meantime, what I've found to be helpful when hiring candidates is to narrow the field down to two or three candidates - and then have a team of at least three employees interview each candidate.
That way I gain my own viewpoint of each candidate as well as the viewpoints of key people within the department or company on their thoughts about each candidate.
In lieu of psychological testing, I suppose the old saying holds true, "Two heads are better than one" - especially when it comes to evaluating job candidates.
