Any company that mistreats their employees is almost certainly mistreating their customers - the customers probably just do not realize it yet.
I think that is why we have had so many problems with toys and food that are imported from China. Their human rights record shows that they view their own people as expendable and not valuable. What makes us think they care about anything beyond profitability when it comes to the American consumer?

As you say, these are changes that cannot come fast enough. Successful careers should not be, as you say, achieved by one narrow path of workaholism. It should be possible to achieve success without sacrificing life in its entirety.
One strange thing I have noticed: sometimes older people, especially women, do not support younger people in this quest. It's as if they are saying, "We had to feel this pain, and so must you." That is unfortunate. How about instead desiring something better for those who follow in your footsteps?

Ah, but being busy and overstressed and in a hurry is just the American Way. Funny how our "social tools" can actually cause us to connect less with other people because we're too busy staying electronically connected.

Also, if you want a good example of people ignoring the signs of what someone "might" do just because they hadn't actually done anything yet, Google the name Wayne Lo. It's a college incident and not a workplace one, but its relevant.

Actually, I think we make those kinds of split-second judgment calls all the time, sometimes without even realizing what we're doing. In fact, certain people, like police interrogators, are taught to look for "microexpressions" which are tiny little hints that people are lying. It's astoundingly accurate.
For that reason, I think that if the science is reliable, companies should absolutely use those tools. We worry so much about protecting the rights of the person by excluding them from getting the job (even though we exclude people from getting the job all the time simply by selecting another candidate whom we thought was better) and then we look back later and wonder why it all went wrong.
It's the price of living in a litigous society.

I've always found that if you ask people thoughtful questions about themselves and let them talk, they will find you to be the most brilliant conversationalist ever, even if you barely spoke at all!
